Situations we sort out

Years behind on tax returns. Fixable, properly.

People fall behind for ordinary reasons — illness, a business under pressure, records that scattered. The fix is not heroic. It is methodical, and it starts with knowing exactly where you stand.

An overdue return does not improve with age: penalties can accrue, refunds sit unclaimed, and lenders start asking for lodgments you cannot show. But the problem is almost always smaller than it feels, because most of the record can be rebuilt.

We start by confirming with the ATO precisely which years it expects from you — not what you remember, what their systems show. Then we reconstruct each year from prefill data, bank records and employer and platform reports, prepare the returns oldest-first, and lodge a file that holds together.

Where there are grounds, we put remission of penalties and interest to the ATO in writing. Where tax is owing, we help you propose a payment arrangement rather than avoid the letter.

What we see

  • People convinced the records are gone, when most of a year can be rebuilt from prefill and bank data.
  • Refunds in old years left unclaimed because the file felt too hard to open.
  • Penalties compounding quietly because nobody was speaking to the ATO.
  • Do-it-yourself catch-ups that create a second problem inside the first.

How the catch-up runs

Outstanding lodgment check

As your registered tax agent we confirm with the ATO exactly which returns are outstanding — the starting line, in writing.

Record reconstruction

ATO prefill, bank statements and employer and platform reports assembled year by year, so each return has a basis.

Lodgment in sequence

Oldest year first, each reconciled before the next — so carried-forward amounts land where they should.

Penalty and interest remission

Where the circumstances support it, we request remission in writing and keep the correspondence on file.

Payment arrangements

If there is a debt at the end, we help you put a realistic payment proposal to the ATO instead of a silence.

A catch-up done here ends with more than lodged returns — it ends with a reconstructed file, so the years you fixed stay fixed. See our method →

Common questions

How many years back can this go?

As far as the ATO's records require. The first step is a formal check of what is actually outstanding — people are often behind by fewer years, or more, than they think.

Will I be penalised for lodging late?

Penalties and interest can apply to late lodgment, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can do is request remission where your circumstances support it, and stop the position getting worse.

I've lost most of my records. Is it still possible?

Usually, yes. ATO prefill reaches back years, banks can reissue statements, and employers and platforms hold their own reporting. We rebuild from those sources and document what each figure rests on.

Will you deal with the ATO for me?

Yes. Once you appoint us as your tax agent, correspondence runs through us — you stop guessing at letters and we answer them with the file.

What if I can't pay the tax bill at the end?

Lodging and arranging are separate steps. Returns first, so the debt is known rather than feared — then a payment proposal to the ATO that your cash flow can actually meet.
